Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh- “The Book of Kings” Gallery

Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh

The Shahnameh of Ferdowsi combines Persian and English calligraphy. The collection includes 30 works of art, created by Mojtaba Karami to honor the millennium of Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, and ordered by the Art Department of the Ministry of Culture. The works were presented in 5 calligraphy styles including Nastaliq (one of the main calligraphic methods used in writing Persian script and traditionally the predominant style in Persian calligraphy) and broken Nastaliq for Farsi; Copper Plate, Italic and Gothic for English. The translations were by the famous Englishman Edward Brown. The aim was to present the poetry, the expression and perspective of the famed Iranian Poet and Dr. Abolghasem Ferdowsi. The other aim was to transfer the meaning of the poetry and words through calligraphy to non-Iranian audience. The goal of creating the works was to show the global influence of Persian calligraphy and visual arts.
